about

Daymond brought this poem to the group and another called CLOUDY, which had a line in it, “Every silver lining has a cloud.” I used NEW LIFE as the basis for the verses, and the “silver lining” line for the chorus. Got my old bandmates Mark Tomeo and Steve Adams to (virtually) play on this one as well. – JD

NEW LIFE

What do you do when a new life is handed to you
A fresh start, a moment in time where nothing is falling apart
How do you survive when you lead with your heart?
Where’s the silver lining when all I see are clouds?
Why does my pain feel like it’s screaming out loud?
I’ve got to let go and I just don’t know how.
What do I do, what do I say?
How many ways are there to say I’m not doing okay.
The silver lining is my sobriety
And the cloud is the destruction I’ve caused
So I lie awake at night and cry with my thoughts
An endless cycle, thoughts running in a death spiral
Down further and harder
Rock bottom has nothing on this
Where is my paradigm shift
How do I use this gift
When in all reality I’m just pissed
I can’t stop and sit
But I promise you this
My pain is a hit
As you listen to it
You feel all the words
Life has thrown us some curves
And you all should be heard
You’re not failing if you miss each verb
This is a program of action
But remember your days, they stack son.
I don’t know where I’m going
So here I am rolling
Just sitting here letting the words start flowing
Just sitting around my recovery’s growing

lyrics

SILVER LINING ©2022 Daymond Walford, John Dillon

A fresh start, a moment where nothing falls apart
How do you live when you lead with your heart?
Where’s the silver lining when all I see are clouds?
Why does my pain feel like it's screaming out loud?

I got to let go, but I don’t know the way
How can I say I’m just not okay?

The silver lining is my sobriety
The cloud’s my past destructive notoriety

Every silver lining has a cloud
Sometimes the light is covered by a shroud
Can't have recovery without addiction's pain
Can't appreciate the sun without the rain

I lie awake at night and I cry with my thoughts

An endless loop, can't connect all the dots
They’re running wild like a spiral of death

Further and harder, can't seem to catch my breath

Every silver lining has a cloud
Sometimes the light is covered by a shroud
Can't have recovery without addiction's pain
Can't appreciate the sun without the rain

Rock bottom has nothing on this, where is my paradigm shift?
How do I use this gift, when really I’m just pissed

What do you do when a new life is handed to you?
What do you see when you look out at the view?
A fresh start, a moment where nothing falls apart
I’m learning how to live when I lead with my heart

Every silver lining has a cloud
Sometimes the light is covered by a shroud
Can't have recovery without addiction's pain
Can't appreciate the sun without the rain
Can't grow without working through my pain
